Russian Movies with subtitles

There are some great sources online for viewing Russian movies with subtitles, but it can be hard to find them if you don’t know what you’re looking for.  I intend to list ones that I find here to help others!

I used to list some movies here, but I realized many people missed them by thinking this was just a column header, so I moved them to a sub-page. Click on the “Russian Movies with subtitles” menu link to see that page again.

Other resources for Russian movies with English subtitles:

  1. birubir, a fellow who lives in Moscow, has uploaded an amazing amount of movies to the site veehd.com. You need to download a plug-in to watch movies there, by the way, so if you are accessing the web via a public computer, you might not be able to watch them.

Well, I watched part of “The Idiot” and I must say that it is wonderful! Your plan to upload an episode once a week is a great idea because as you know, one has time to learn at an agreeable and reasonable pace. Certainly, the enjoyment of watching is made all the more enjoyable with anticipation!

    Once again, thank you!

  6. harriet says:

ah, so this is where i should comment on the idiot. brilliant, loving it so much, thankyou. the prince looks exactly as i imagined him to look. such a great cast, and filmed in st peterburg the year before i moved there, so it’s all nostalgia for me.

    • brucedumes says:

I’m so glad to hear that you are enjoying it! It is exceptional. You are so fortunate to have spent time in St. Petersburg! I haven’t had the chance to go yet, but I sure look forward to going someday.

  7. Mike Schreiber says:

Are there additional episodes of “The Idiot” forthcoming?? I sure hope so, as I have been thoroughly enjoying the production. Now a 62 year old, I have just recently returned to my study of Russian – which I had taken for only two years back in my college days. OMG…. some 40 years ago!!!! Please keep up the great work with your Blogsite. Я ето люблю !

    Спасибо,

    Миша

I’ve being trying to learn Russian and I feel that I’m ready for the next step: watching and understanding Russian movies with the help of …subtitles. So I’m not THAT ready after all! I kept searching through Yandex.ru 10 minutes a day and got a little bit discouraged, not that it’s impossible. Your site will allow me to save many hours of search and it is so great that you’ll keep updating it.

Really… thank you, great job. I can’t wait to start with The Idiot. I was told that mini-series was a total success and very well filmed.

May I make a suggestion ? Kin-Dza-Dza. Such a great science fiction concept and funny in my opinion.

    до свиданья!

PS: I hope Russia and Canada get in the finals for the Vancouver’s Olympics. That’d be a great match, wouldn’t it :-)

  26. Strex says:

    Privet Everyone,
    Great site indeed!
I know that TV-shows are not as classy and valuable as good Russian films, but recently I have acquired a few episodes the Belarussian version (they still speak Russian) of Big Bang Theory and the first season of the Russian made Как я встретил вашу маму. Is there any chance I can find Russian subtitles for them? I have spent a couple of hours googling, with no success so far…

  27. Strex, I don’t think that it is possible to find these films, by the way, they are sh*t :) It’s better to find some original russian movies, they can be interesting and you have better chance to find them with subs.
sorry for bad English, my native is russian. If u would like to speak, chat or u have questions – skype me: kurump

Hi, I’m new to Russian language. Just started some months ago, but I love it and your work just makes it easier. I find it’s a perfect complement to the grammar lessons and this is how the brain best retains new words and expressions, by watching them being used in films. Keep up the good work, please! Love from Spain.

    • brucedumes says:

Thanks! And good luck with your Russian studies! Always remember: It’s a process. Don’t worry about mistakes. Just keep involved in the language and the mistakes will fade away in time all by themselves.

I’m looking for a Russian comedy film I saw on R’n TV in 1999 – so the film was made earlier – about a prison camp that was preparing for Lenin’s birthday. It was hilarious (really!) but I can’t remember the title and would love to find it again. Any help appreciated!

The title to the film is probably “Комедия строгого режима”-a severe regime comedy. The title uses a play of words. A phrase “Колиния строгого режима” means something like a severe regime colony (prison), a place with a lot of disciplinary restrictions forserious criminals. Колония-комедия sound similar.
